Stopover and Christmas in Vienna

As plane tickets were cheaper with a stopover, we thought why not spend Christmas Eve on a plane and Christmas day in Vienna on the way to Hungary? We arrived to our hotel (Hotel Prinz Eugen) just before midnight, this was a very different Christmas Eve to others before. The hotel’s stay included an amazing buffet breakfast so after an early wake up we filled our tummies up with lots of food ready for our day trip around Vienna.

Our first stop was the Danube tower. On the way there walking from the metro stop, there was no one on the streets, it felt like no one else existed except us. We were unsure whether the Danube tower would be open but we were very happy to find that there were other tourists there and we were able to go up the tower. We didn’t have enough Euros with us so paid with a card, the tickets cost 13 Euros for the both of us. The view was amazing but the wind was so strong that it nearly blew Sassi away.

Our next stop was the Schönbrunn Palace. There were lots of tourists there, this spot was a lively part of Vienna so was the rest of our trip. We had some mulled wine at the Christmas market outside of the palace.

Our journey carried on with visiting the Rathaus and the big Christmas market outside of the Rathaus where we had some yummy lunch. This Christmas market was the biggest Christmas market we have ever been to, it was an awesome experience and made us feel more Christmassy.

We finished our day trip by visiting the centre of Vienna including St Stephen’s Cathedral. Vienna is a nice city but if you are not an opera fan, classical music fan etc… we would recommend only staying there for a short stay (I think a day’s trip was enough) or visiting the surrounding areas instead as there are lots of beautiful mountains nearby. For Sassi as a nature and landscape lover, Vienna didn’t become her favourite city but it was a lovely day trip anyhow.
